On October 2, 2025, The Malaysian Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints handed over essential heart health equipment donated for use at the Sarawak General Hospital and Sarawak Health Center. The equipment, comprising two vital sign monitors and a mid-range echo machine, are slated to benefit 14,000 Sarawakians annually – almost 30 percent of the over 50,000 heart patients in the state.
The donation was initiated and facilitated by non-government organization Sarawak Heart Foundation in a first-time collaboration with the Church. Foundation Deputy Chairman YB Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian oversaw the handover to two health institutions, with Foundation Trustees Dato Anne Teng and Pauline Kon present, along with Hospital Director Dr. Ngian Hie Ung and Heart Centre Director Dr. Haji Mohd Asri Bin Ariffin.

Their values and focus correlate with what we try to do – to touch the hearts and lives of others.” The Foundation will oversee the delivery, installation, registration and maintenance of the equipment with the Ministry of Health.
Malaysia has seen a significant climb in cardiovascular disease over the past eight years. As the leading cause of death in the country regardless of gender, the demand for care is urgent and requires the support of many helping hands. The donations will allow timely healthcare services to be rendered, including critical interventions.
The addition of another vital sign monitor in both health institutions will enhance their capabilities to provide medical and rehabilitation services to patients with heart disease, enabling them to serve another approximately 150 patients per month.
Enhanced service for Sarawakians is also expected with the donation of the mid-range echo machine to the Sarawak Heart Center. The efficiency of the new machine will potentially reduce the waiting time for non-urgent cases to receive an echocardiogram from six to four months.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is committed to supporting and promoting improved healthcare access and outcomes across Malaysia. Donated funds are contributed by Church members young and old from across the global congregation and specifically set aside for humanitarian purposes.
“It is our hope that these donations impact real people here, as they were given by real people who care,” added Mr Chua.
