Service at Shekinah Home for Women

What started out five months ago as a one day service project by Volunteers from LDS Charities, has become a weekly act of service, love, and joy; both for the volunteers and for residents living at a Klang, Malaysia  senior care center.

Each Friday morning, at least 4 volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bicycle to Shekinah Home for Women in Klang, Malaysia to complete needed projects. Items range from landscaping, cutting the grass, painting the walls, washing windows, preparing birthday charts, and other much needed service.

Gage Cook from Kaysville, Utah said that the service he gives "really ends up being fun,  we each are developing a love for the Malaysian people." Star Valley, Wyoming resident, Austin Valentine said he has been giving weekly service at Shekinah Home for 20 weeks. At first he thought it was a sacrifice for him, but he has found that the sacrifice "has brought many blessings, to the people that live here, and especially to me! I love to come here each week and will miss this opportunity when I leave".

Anna Teresa, a resident, shared how happy she was to be living at Shekinah Home. She is no longer home alone during the day, but has friends around her and people who help .  Family members are welcome to visit and come often.  She appreciates  "helping hands boys that come every week to make things better for us".

One of the Helping Hands Volunteers, Ethan Cash from Salt Lake City said  "these women have shown me how important it is to be optimistic about life. I have only been coming here for three weeks, but the women are great. Their energy drives each us to give our best as we serve."

Although founded by the Tamil Annual Conference of Methodist Women, anyone is welcome, regardless of faith.  Mrs. Violet Dass is the Chairman and Ms. Leela Ramani is the Supervisor.

To assist Shekinah Home in their quest to provide a quality living environment for the residents, LDS Charities has donated 2 dining room sets, 3 air conditioners, a refrigerator, washing machine, and a computer and printer, as well as countless hours by volunteers each week.
