Family is one of the most meaningful words in any language, for any culture, creed or nation regardless of age or gender. It is a word that biologically links one human to another, in a continuous relationship between them and many others for endless generations. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, family is the pillar of gospel living and beliefs.[1] We believe families are eternal and can be together beyond this earthly life. For this reason, Latter-day Saints are highly engaged in discovering their family history.[2]

A great example of this is reflected in the recent Family History activity for children organized by the Kuala Lumpur (KL) District Primary Organization. This event was held on June 15, 2024 at the KL District Center in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

Leading this activity was Annie Teh, the District Primary President and her counselors Vicki Wells and Sharon Dayang. Teh said, “This activity is organized to bless parents and children with an opportunity to gather as a family, and learn to work together to compile stories and memories of their family and ancestors. As they build their family tree, the feeling of love for family members both alive and demised grows.”

Liesl May Semaña, a 10-year-old primary-aged child shared about her family history to all attendees. When asked to express her thoughts, she replied, “Family history is for everyone and I wish to share more about this topic to my friends and neighbors. Family history is fun and I can even get to know the stories of my ancestors from a long time ago.”

Jesse Tan Hua Peng, a well composed 11-year-old young man recalled, “When I was a young child my parents and grandparents would have family tree activities. This sparked my interest in family history. When I got more familiar, I would help my grandma in Ipoh to check her data entry and print it out.”

Isaiah Chan Kar Sing, aged 9 felt very confident and excited about family history. He quipped, “I have learned a lot from this activity today, and I am excited to share my knowledge during our family home evening on how to build a family tree.”

There were 50 participants that made the lively activity a success with 21 children and 29 parents and friends attending. Having them build a passion for family history, learn how to discover and to record information about their ancestors will help the children learn about their identity and heritage. As written in Psalms 127:3, “Children are an heritage of the Lord.”[3] Besides the activity of making a creative family history photobook, the program included a gospel learning session by Carol Ng, KL District Relief Society Counselor, a sharing session by Dale Wells, KL District Presidency Counselor, and Vicki Wells, KL District Primary Counselor, and finally desserts after.

The Primary Organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints currently has approximately one million children attending from ages 18 months to 11 years. This organization was established in 1878 with the purpose of teaching the children about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Plan of Salvation, and God’s love for them.[4]
