To encourage Church members to press forward in health and wellness, the Kuala Lumpur (KL) District Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized an event titled “Empower Your Wellness” on September 28, 2024. It was held at the KL District Center in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. In attendance were approximately one hundred and thirty women from local branches. The event was held both in-person for female church members living in the Klang Valley, and through Zoom for those in other states.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe in healthy living in body, mind, heart, and spirit. In 1833, the Word of Wisdom was revealed to early Church members in Kirtland in the United States by Church president and prophet Joseph Smith. It was a guideline to have a healthy lifestyle that would provide both physical and spiritual blessings. Moving forward, Church members continue to live the Word of Wisdom as a principle with a promise that supports health and wellbeing in life’s journey.
Peggy Wong, the KL District Relief Society President shared the purpose of having this event. She stated, “Along with my counselors Carol Ng and Monique Teh, we planned this wellness activity with a focus on promoting healthy habits among the sisters and their families. Drawing from the Church’s [scripture in] Doctrine and Covenants 89:18-21, the teachings of the Word of Wisdom emphasize eating right, maintaining emotional health, and caring for one's physical wellbeing. Blessings come from obedience to the Word of Wisdom such as receiving physical and spiritual strength, wisdom, and protection.”
Sophia Ho from the Petaling Jaya branch, shared her appreciation. Ho said, “Thanks to the KL District Relief Society Presidency for organizing a fun and enlightening activity. I learned to take care of my physical, mental and spiritual health.”
During the activity, participants were attentively engaged listening and taking notes from three expert facilitators in health and wellness, namely, Dr. Rajendra Paul Dass, a medical doctor; Lee Chen Ying, a psychologist; and, Anita Augustin, a physiotherapist. All three are Church members and successful practitioners in their field of expertise.
Dr. Dass presented recommendations for meal planning, which are wholesome, nutritious, and help develop a healthier, stronger body. He also stressed on reducing fats, oil, salt, and sugar so as to strengthen the effectiveness of healthy food choices that are consumed. Other than food, he also suggested various herbs, spices, and flowers that contribute to sustaining a healthful lifestyle. In summary, Dr. Dass’s sharing presented the benefits of maintaining balanced and nourishing meals by making full use of all healthy and clean food that God created for long term physical and spiritual wellbeing.
Besides food and diet, mental health was the next topic presented. Lee Chen Ying shared about the importance of good mental well-being and practical ways to do so. She encouraged the attendees to have a variety of activities, including proper sleep, regular exercise, healthy eating, and to develop good relationships for good mental health. Lee also mentioned ways to manage stress and anxiety through techniques like mindfulness and time management. More importantly, she encouraged the audience to seek professional help and support if needed. In closing, Lee expressed the spiritual aspect of faith as part of the healing journey for those who may be experiencing mental health concerns.
Concluding the event was a physiotherapy session and talk by Anita Augustin. She taught the audience various basic exercises that can be performed anywhere anytime. This included neck, shoulder, head, arm, and leg exercises. The participants were engaged in performing these physio-movements including a short, upbeat aerobic session. Augustin also presented causes of musculoskeletal health problems following which, she taught the correct way of sitting on a chair, or ways to use a mobile phone to avoid developing musculoskeletal issues. She also emphasized the importance of exercise and correct body posture for the body’s wellbeing for both the young and elderly.
“It was a wonderful session, well prepared and well taught,” commented Rachel Mak from the Cheras branch. She further shared, "I feel grateful to have learned a lot, and enjoyed the healthy refreshments that were served.”
