“At the peak of the pandemic in 2020, and in the middle of a lockdown, the Church was able to help a local community supported by PSPK,” said President Royce Tai who shared his experience. “Funds were donated by LDS Charities to enable the association to produce bread that would in turn be donated to the impoverished.”
He further added, “In 2021, at the request of PSPK and as well as our desire to extend more assistance, LDS Charities arranged for a contribution of more than just bread. Groceries as well as essential household items such as toiletries were offered. These provisions helped lift the burden of those in the lower income group seriously affected by ongoing lockdowns.”
President Tai was very pleased that the project was a success as he witnessed many families and individuals receiving food supply and other necessities. Recipients were expressing deep gratitude for the donations received.
One of the volunteers at the event, Victoria Ho, said she was very happy to serve and support the Church in this project.
She shared, “It was a meaningful experience. Volunteering gave me an opportunity to take time out of my busy schedule to serve the needy, especially during the Christmas season. The donation drive was a great way to support the Church’s Light the World campaign. I’m sure the receivers felt God’s love as I felt the Savior’s love for them.”
Established in 2006, the Association of Social Services and Community Development of Gombak District, Selangor, Malaysia (PSPK - Pertubuhan Perkhidmatan Sosial dan Pembangunan Komuniti) is a non-profit, charitable and tax-exempted organization. The association focuses on single mothers and their children, needy women, and senior citizens by providing them social services and enterprising skills training. The association also provides a framework that empowers the women to be self-sustaining.
Over the past years the association had received contributions from LDS Charities. This included a fully-equipped bakery facility, a computer laboratory fitted with computer workstations, a sewing room fitted with tables and sewing machines, a study room, and an industrial roofing over an open area at the association’s center.
LDS Charities, the Kuala Lumpur Malaysia District Presidency, and the Church’s National Communication Council in Malaysia continue to support the association’s quest to develop self-reliance and enterprising skills among the less-importuned women and their families in Selangor, Malaysia.
